Cargill Industrial Oils & Lubricants Expands Capacity

CHICAGO – February 12, 2004
- In response to growing demand for its biobased esters, Cargill Industrial Oils & Lubricants will double the capacity of its Chicago manufacturing plant by March 1.

The need to boost capacity can be attributed to growth in both of Cargill’s base businesses:

  • Cargill’s line of patented lubricant products continues to expand.
  • Interest in new alternative biobased intermediates for paints and coatings continues to grow as states begin to implement stricter limits on volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

“We are already the leading U.S. producer of biobased oils for paints and coatings,” noted Cargill Industrial Oils & Lubricants President Kurtis Miller. “In doubling our capacity, we’ll serve that market even better, and position ourselves for strong growth in lubricants as well.”

Cargill’s roster of lubricant products includes:

  • Agri-Pure™ base oils, used by lubricant manufacturers in applications ranging from hydraulic fluids to engine oils.
  • Agri-Sperse™ base oil emulsifiers for industrial applications that require the suspension of oil in a water base.
  • Fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) for use as industrial cleaning solvents in metal cleaning and precision cleaning applications.

Though Cargill’s own products will take the lion’s share of the new capacity, Miller said he anticipates limited opportunities to toll manufacture for others as well.
