Linseed Products

Linseed oil is obtained from flaxseed grown in the Red River Valley of the United States and Canada.  The seed contains approximately 35% oil which is removed by a solvent extraction process.

The "crude" linseed oil is made into a product called ASTM Raw by mechanical degumming and filtering.

"Supreme" or refined linseed oil is produced by alkali refining, bleaching, chilling and filtering (dewaxing) the crude linseed oil.  Once refined linseed oil is refined but is not bleached or dewaxed.

Because linseed oil has a high level of unsaturation (an average of about 50% linolenic acid) it is classified as a drying oil. This makes it a prime ingredient for coatings and other applications that require excellent film forming properties.
